Developmental psychology-- branch of psychology that studies physical, cognitive, and social change throughout the lifespan. Germinal- zygote forms, rapidly multiples, placenta forms. Embryonic- zygote become embryo, vital organs form (not sex organs), most miscarriages. Fetal- child is now fetus, physical development, feel the baby kick (motor), age of viability: point at which baby can be born and survive. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder-- caused from alcohol consumption and wide range of effects. Fasd: physical & psychological symptoms: facial abnormalities, growth deficits, mental retardation. Attachment- emotional bonds of affection that develop between infants and their caregivers. Harry harlow"s research-- evidence against the behaviorist theory and for a social/emotional theory of attachment. Mary ainsworth"s the strange situation: secure attachment. Often distressed at separation, but quickly calmed by caregiver"s return. Seeks little interaction with caregiver and not upset when caregiver leaves. Infant appears anxious even when caregiver is near. Infant shows dazed behavior; confused in presence of caregiver.
