Objective, not subjective- recognize and avoid bias with statistics, replication, and collaboration. Get an idea --> define variables --> identify participants --> design your experiment --> collect data --> evaluate data with stats --> publish results--> refine your idea. Theory- an idea about how the world works based on empirical data. Goal of science is to develop and test theories. Psychological theories- set of integrated statements that explain behavior. Hypothesis- specific idea about the relation between constructs that is derived from the theory. Operational definition- specifies how each construct will be measured. Ex- measure heart rate in relation to stress. Details are important even when construct seems simple. Not concerned with relationships between variables, but a description of the variables themselves.
