Document Summary

Use of stock phrases, common epithets and grandiose adjectives often improvised by poetry. Epic functions as a tribal encyclopedia preserving and memorializing all the practices and traditions of culture. Example: achilles is given a shield by the gods and on the shield there"s pictures of important aspects of greek culture. Nothing to do with the story - just there to memorialize how the greek society is supposed to be. Dad tells a story of this is what we"re supposed to do. The guy tells a story of what is possible. Not like an epic - an epic never tells you what"s possible it tells you what is and what will always be. Onged words or words that just fly out from the heart from one character to another. Epics don"t want prudent judgement through persuasive appeal but rather show the power of a heroes virtue and excellence eloquence. Mind well stocked with accurate memories and sound.
