Document Summary

Lexington and concord- april 1775: first outbreak of fighting. Second continental congress- may 1775: basis for ongoing central government. French alliance 1778- key to american victory. Common sense persuaded people on the continental congress to declare independce and fight a war that will follow. Washington"s army had disadvantages -> not too many people, low on supplies (militias gave supplies), short on money. England had disadvantages too -> england had 10,000 miles to travel and couldn"t live off the land. the english didn"t know how to fight against a moving army -> they were used to going to the cities headquarters. The colonists weren"t going to win without the french, but they werent going to come in unless they knew there was a chance of winning. French navy, troops, generals, and supplies were sent to the colonists. In the declaration of independence, the king was the bad idea. Previous to the declaration of independence, parliament has been the one to blame.
