Document Summary

Digestion: process by which food is broken down into absorbable units. Absorption: uptake of nutrients by the cells of the gastrointestinal tract for transport into either the blood or lymph. Reduction in particle size -> increases surface area of materials. Isotonic: solution containing the same number of non-penetrating particles (prevents lysing and bursting) Enzymatic digestion of large molecules to small fragments. Absorption of small molecules of digestion across the intestinal cells. Lumen of gi is outside of the body! Gi is designed to have different components to keep us away from toxins, etc. Nothing is inside the body until it is absorbed by the gi. Saliva has enzymes that start to break down carbohydrates, etc. Certain drugs - good proximity to the brain. Failure to do so in time - choking. Chyme: food after mixed in the stomach (now semi liquid)with gastrointestinal juice. Key part of enzymatic digestion is this step!
