Detoxifies drugs and alcohol - it"s what gets things out of your body that needs to be gotten out. Fatty liver - accumulation of fat in the liver. Most are asymptomatic - doesn"t show any symptoms. It can lead to severe problems -> cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer. Fecal material in the water (very unsanitary environment) Depends on underlying cause, most likely not needed. Impaired liver function -> can lead to failure. Drug induced liver injury - has to be pretty substantial. Anorexia - not feeling hungry; not same as eating disorder (anorexia nervosa) Fat malabsorption - liver is not functioning properly. Portal hypertension - scar tissue of liver impedes blood flow. Portal vein has a whole lot of blood. Causes a rise in pressure in the portal vein. Collaterals become enlarged and engorged forming varices and may rupture. Esophageal varices - blood vessels around the esophagus get closed out.
