Laswell definition: process that determines who gets what, when and how for a society: implies that people are in conflict, need rules to resolve conflict. Easton definition: authoritative allocation of values for a society: resolves question of who receives benefits. Conflicts must be resolved: if not, it threatens society. Conflicts arise because we are all different needs to be different in opinions. 3 means of disagreeing: right vs. wrong, society"s priorities, scarce resources. Authority= decisions that are backed up by legit power. Legitimacy= acceptance of something as necessary, rightful, legally binding. Both help us understand politics and role of government in society. Refers to structure arrangements where politics take place: small tribes nation states, bigger more complex. Government"s activities: set down rules and laws, implement national policies. To establish justice and insure domestic tranquility: manages conflict and maintains order, so we aren"t whoever has the most guns wins .
