We become okay with it almost b/c we hear/see it so often. We don"t even turn on the tv anymore when we hear of a shooting. Violence is part of the fabric of our society. Popular culture, television, music videos, video games start noticing the instances of violence against women; very significant. It"s so much part of our narrative/daily lives, that we don"t even realize it. There is, of course, a continuum (street violence to murder and everything in between) Prior to the women"s movement, if a woman is a rape victim and goes to court, the defense attorney can ask you to bring up all of your previous sexual history (for reasonable doubt) Concept of marital rape is illegal now. Concept of sexual harassment didn"t exist before. If men (as a category) do not change their behavior, the violence isn"t going to stop. Telling women to protect themselves all the time. Instead of telling men not to rape women.
