machismo and marianismo are seen in almost all of the aspects of columbia"s society. machismo can be seen generally in the men working at tropic oil. They work legal jobs to make money, but they do it mostly for the respect and dignity that comes along with it. The idea of men supporting their families and themselves is present in machismo and is the driving force behind the men at the tropic oil company. This is celebrated by them and the women and seen as a positive thing. Marianismo is seen with the women in tora and is celebrated until the catholic. Church comes to preach that prostitution is a sin. One part of marianismo is this idea that women should be like the virgin mary. Even though the prostitutes are not pure and virginal, they are still compared to the virgin mary in one way or another throughout the book.
