Culture: a system of values and norms that are shared among a group of people and that when taken together constitute a design for living. Fault lines: boundary between incompatible or irreconcilable beliefs, cultures, etc, ex. rural vs urban, democrat vs republican, blue collar vs white collar, religion vs atheism, race / skin colors. Society + cultural connection + nation state: one country can have many cultures, ex. northern and eastern india, nation states can contain > 1 cultures, a culture can embrace many nations, ex. Determinants of culture: religion, political philosophy, economic philosophy, education, language, social structure. Social structure: basic unit of social organization is the individual or group, degree to which society is stratified, different social classes. Group vs individual: asian societies (collectivist, lifetime employment, cooperation in solving business problems, suppress individual imitative and creativity, reach company agreements easier, western societies (individualism, dynamism of us economy.
