Meninges: 3 layers of connective tissue, separated by spaces or potential spaces, protect brain and spinal cord. Tight junctions between endothelial cells that form the capillary walls (structure that creates blood brain barrier) Controls passage from blood to cells in brain. Glucose, fats, fatty acids, alcohols, o2, co2. Most drugs, metabolic wastes, small amino acids, some toxins. Connects structures in each side or hemisphere. Short: connect adjacent gyri within same lobe. Sensory and motor functions for opposite side of body. Non-verbal functions: interpreting musical patters or spatial relationships. Directs muscles of tongue throat and lips: articulating words. Post- central gyrus: information from receptors in skin and proprioceptors. Visual cortex: receives input from retinas. Auditory cortex: receive input from ear. Smell-(cid:862)u(cid:374)cus(cid:863) olfactory: medical and deep temporal lobe. Primary functional organization association areas: anterior portions of frontal lobes, lateral, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, functions, analyze and interprets sensory experiences. Especially with memory, reasoning, verbalizing, judgment, emotional feelings.
