The 13th amendment was ignored by the southern states. Made all people born or naturalized in the united states citizens and it established equal protection and due process of the law. Federal constitution made applicable by the states. Overturn the dred scott case by expanding the definition of a natural citizen. Prohibited any claim by a former slaveholder for compensation. Used to overturn the rule that banned african americans from serving on juries. It was only passed because the southern states didn"t have the representation in congress. Then those states ratified it because it was the only way to be readmitted into the union. This amendment prohibits the states or the federal gov"t from using a citizen"s race, color, or previous status as a slave as a voting qualification.
