PBHL 2201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Protein Subunit, Virola, Smallpox
Document Summary
Vaccine preventable diseases are at an all-ime low. Small pox is eradicated across the world due to a global immunizaion campaign. Vaccinaion- method of giving anigen (toxin or foreign body) to simulate the human"s immune response through acive immunizaions to produce anibodies. Immunizaion- the process by which an individual"s immune system becomes foriied against an agent. Vaccine- is an immune-biological substance deigned to produce speciic protecion against a given disease. Types of vaccines= live vaccines, live, atenuated vaccines, inacived (killed) vaccines, toxoid vaccines, subunit/ recombinant vaccines. Live vaccines- live vaccines are made from live infecious agents without any amendment. Small pox vaccine is made of live vaccinia cowpox virus or virola vaccine. Live, atenuated vaccines- contain a version of living microbe that has been weakened in a lab. Can"t cause disease but retain their immunogenicity so they have anigens so it can cause the body to produce anibodies. Cant be used on old and young and wreaked immune system.
