In our intro lectures we have stressed the idea that tourism is an important part of the modern world economy and both effects the world economy and is affected by the world economy. To understand how tourism works you need to understand how the world works. But-lots of misperceptions based on obsolete facts. People often talk of the third world. Phrase coined in 1952 to refer to countries not aligned with either. First world-western economies; mixed capitalism with public sector intervention. Third world-what was left; often poor; often only recently independent of colonial power. We still talk and think in these terms but are they still relevant. In 1800 we were all sick and poor. Western countries were the first to be well and rich. Many other parts of the world have joined the west in the well and rich club. Typically the pathway was first health, then wealth.
