Document Summary

Our life runs between living objects and others that we consider not alive. We differentiate a living organism, with life, from a dead one, without life. We observe and study living beings and, perhaps without major difficulties, we have approved courses in biology, botany or zoology; and until now almost all of us talk about life and living beings with certain security. Simpler than a macromolecule, it is a molecule, and more than that, the atoms that make it up. Then atoms, molecules, macromolecules are increasing levels of complexity of organization of matter. After macromolecules - and with them - the first forms of life emerge. To approach a definition of life we must identify the processes that allow the appearance and maintenance of chemical structures that through energy flows are able to reproduce and survive in an environment of which they become part. These three functions occur in all living beings, from the most basic living structures: cells.
