Education was illegal for slaves, after emancipation- schools set up in the south. Public university system represents the freedom of education for slaves. Education as a path towards independence and mobility. Independency, mobility, opens other career paths, ability to read and write better (bible), freedom of assembly. Religion: christianity in the south (congregations focused on freedom and liberation that are present in the bible: old and new testament), ability to gather in their own churches in open and freedom. One of the first rights the former slaves seize upon is gathering their own churches. Family- family relations that were separated before slavery are recognized during emancipation. Families were often separated and treated as commodities during slavery. One of the first things slaves did was go somewhere else; people achieving freedom.
