Did not believe african americans would work much if they were free. Slave owners predicted that emancipation would mean economic downfall. African americans would need land of their own, voting rights, etc to protect their rights. Discovered that the end of the war did not mean peace, instead the u. s. entered reconstruction defined the forming meaning of slaves. Years of reconstruction are years of struggle and what emancipation really means. Must provide housing, food, medical care, & wages. Required to be in contract, obedient, subservient, and work diligently. Meant to distribute food and clothing to the destitute. Has all the power in the world between april and december. Moves to tennessee and becomes a tailor, builds a fortune with a bunch of land. Builds a political reputation attacking really rich plantation owners. Became part of the constitution in december 1865. All land was to be returned to pardoned ex-confederates. Civil rights act of 1866 against black codes (makes them illegal)
