Oregon territory: james k polk, 1844 presidential campaign, ran on platform of manifest destiny focused on oregon, britain wanted oregon too, when polk gets to office he does not do it, sets border if us at 49th parallel. Texas independence: stephen f. austin, empresario, texan settlers, lured to texas with promise of large land grants, tejanos. Mexico and the war: polk takes troops away from taylor, santa anna attacks taylor when he is weak but taylor still defeats him at buenta. North vs south: caning of charles sumner, crime against kansas speech, southerners had unhealthy obsession with slavery, defended slave women, calls out steven douglas (creator of compromise) and andrew butler (south. The civil war: fort sumter, southerners attack and signal beginning of the war in april 1861, virginia, north carolina, tennessee, and arkansas join the confederacy, kansas, west virginia, kentucky and others did not secede.
