14 views3 pages

Document Summary

Nutrition, metabolism and thermoregulation are primarily covered in chapter 23 of amerman (2016). Chapter 16 is included because metabolism especially of glucose is largely controlled by the endocrine system. Nutrients are substances that support the health of tissues and the body as a whole. They are necessary for the cell growth, division and metabolism that support tissue formation, maintenance and repair. Sources and functions of major nutrient groups will be examined in this topic. Macronutrients, also called major nutrients, include carbohydrates, lipids and proteins for which the body has a large requirement. Water is also required in large quantities and is considered a nutrient by some. Most water in the body enters by ingestion of fluids and solid foods. A small amount of water is gained as a result of metabolism and called metabolic water. Water will be discussed in topic 11. Micronutrients, also called minor nutrients, are no less important than macronutrients but smaller amounts of them are required.
