BIOL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Zona Glomerulosa, Angiotensin, Aldosterone
Document Summary
Sodium is the main cation in the ecf. Because it does not readily move into cells it creates most of the osmotic pressure between the ecf and. Sodium is also essential to neural and muscular function. The cells of the zona glomerulosa respond directly to decreased plasma sodium and increased plasma potassium (see a&p i: Endocrine system) and increase secretion of aldosterone as a result. Atrial natriuretic hormone (anh) is secreted by the atria when blood pressure in the atria increases. These two hormones affect total body sodium. Control of sodium: estrogens steroids produced by ovaries and zona reticularis of adrenal cortex, glucocorticoids steroids produced by zona fasciculata of adrenal cortex, both enhance na+ reabsorption. Estrogens, which are steroids produced by the ovaries and zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex, and glucocorticoids, which are steroids produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex, both enhance sodium reabsorption. Their effect is minor compared to that of aldosterone.
