Document Summary

When elements combine to form compounds, they do so in fixed proportion. When elements form compounds, the element don"t change but how they combine does: early 1900"s, scientist discovered protons, neutrons, electrons. 1: roentgen discover x-rays, maine and pierre curie radioactivity consist of three types of particles. Isotope atoms with the same atomic number but different mass ( due to a different number of neutrons) A = mass number ( protons + neutrons) Ions cations + ( metal) anion ( nonmetal) o ionic bond electrostatic attraction between ion of opposite charge. Covalent compound nonmetal combine with nonmetal o covalent bond a sharing of electrons between nonmetal. Name the metal cation using the element name. If the metal can for more than one cation, use a stock number ( roman numerals) to indicate the charge on the metal cation. Name a monoatomic anion using the first syllable of element name and at -icle ending.
