Surrounded by remains of roman empire, respect for it. Aided by false thought that the romans already did it. Santa maria della fiore (il duomo), florence, by brunelleschi 1420-1436. Brunelleschi"s dome total renaissance man, proposed new dome style. Built without buttresses, nothing for dome to bring lateral forces to ground. Now held up with metal rods to resist tension. Dome: octagonal dome, thick enough to hold circular dome within. Equal thrusts of circle held together ribs up to oculus window. Outer lightweight dome protecting heavy inner dome structure. Reflects d cor (pylasters, etc. ) of correct classical language . Italian churches: dome common where transept crosses nave. Common to see church, campanile, and baptistery in ensemble. Baptistery in florence: thick walls with niches, but unusual dome. Inspired by il duomo beginning of engineering. Showing off architects" skill at interpreting classical language - able to draw it too. Envisioned within circular courtyard - perfect classical proportions.
