Document Summary

The seven characteristics of life: organization (cells) Cell theory: all living organisms are made of cells. Cells come from pre existing cells via cell division: energy use (metabolism) Organisms react to environmental changes to promote survival: homeostasis and regulation. Homeostasis: physiological adaptation to maintain balance: warm blooded- constant internal temp regardless of outside temp. Biosphere: interactions between all organisms on earth and abiotic factors. Community: interactions between biotic systems/assemblage of populations of different species. Population: group of organisms of the same species that occupy the same environment. Species: organisms that can produce viable offspring (genetic compatibility) Tissue: many cells of the same type that associate together. Cell: surrounded by a membrane and contains a variety of molecules + macromolecules. Organelle: membrane-bound and has specific functions but cannot live on its own. Macromolecules: many molecules bonded together to form a polymer. Molecules: multiple atoms bonded together (atoms of more than 1 element)
