SOCI 1040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Heterosexuality, Masculinity, Gender Bender
Document Summary
We develop our sense of self throughout time, there is no inherent self . Present a performance of who we are within the social constructs of location. Dramaturgy: we are just there when we"re alone, but identities and who we are arise from social encounters and other people nearby when we witness them and they witness us. Success of a performance is that others will buy it. Not only manifested in interaction, displays are inevitable and constant; always. Gender is a socially organized accomplishment; if you fail there are penalties. Femininities are formed related to race and class in hegemonic vs. subordinated. Active process of othering - everyone is compared to the white, middle class, privilege woman. Got to a point that women believe their own stereotypes about themselves. Gender achieves status through psychological, cultural, and social means. Even though gender is achieved it seems it is pretty set in stone by age 5.
