1960s women"s movement in us, gained strength in 70s occupations: doctors, secretaries of state, lawyers. Associated with variety of changing gender roles in euro-american society. Women came to challenge their role in a gender hierarchy, taking on non-traditional. Led to an academic movement that emphasized the lack of attention paid to women"s roles in society. Gender studies dpt. , women"s studies, etc. encouraged questioning within. Rosman & rubel: movement to give more attention to role of women was anthropological discipline interested in lived experience of women in relation to the dominant generally patriarchal systems of knowledge in which they lived: How did women express their own agencies. Led increasingly to focus on inequities in society related to gender: how does gender affect ones future/place/prestige in the social system in which they live. How do women express themselves in a way that constitutes their own dignified role in society.
