ANT 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: False Consciousness, Euphemism, For Marx

13 views2 pages

Document Summary

Marx argued that workers in a capitalist society accept the notion that a full days work gets a full days pay- are suffering from a false consciousness which ignores the nature of the exploitive relationship. For marx it was necessary for the preliterate to overcome this false consciousness and understand the reality of the situation. For most people at the bottom of the class hierarchy= its not false consciousness that causes them to acquiesce in the status quo its rather a realistic assessment of the forces against them that keeps them quiet. In his investigation, he found that people were not oblivious to the unfairness of the social relations in which they were involved, of the a symmetry, injustice of their position in society. Aware of that but they were also realists- were not going to be taking chances, or sticking their necks out to be essentially punished or disciplined by the forces of control of the state.
