Jupiter is 318 times bigger than earth, and has more than twice the mass of the other planets, their moon, and the asteroids. Jupiter"s diameter is 11 times of earth, and its volume is 1300 times earth. Jupiter"s density is 1. 3 gm/cm^3, or only the mean density of earth. This means that it is composed of a higher percentage of light elements such as hydrogen and helium then are the terrestrial planets. The jovian planets are more star-like (important) Jupiter is 5. 2 au from the sun and takes 12 years to complete one orbit of the sun. It spins on its axis very quickly, once every 9h50m. Jovian planets have much greater rotation rates. On jupiter, cloud bands near the equator rotate slightly faster (9h50m) than bands near the poles (9h56m). Differential rotation- the rotation of an object in which different parts have different periods of rotation( if its gas or liquid).
