Official diagnostic criteria- person must binge and purge at least twice a week for 3 months. Binge- purge cycles may be daily, weekly or at longer intervals. Binge can be triggered by boredom, loneliness, depression. There is a loss of self control (cake, cookies, ice cream). Purge follows in hopes that no weight will be gained. After the binge/purge, the person feels guilty or depressed about it. This leads to low self esteem or feelings of hopelessness about their situation. Vomiting and use of diuretics can decrease blood potassium. (heart arrhythmia, sudden death) Stomach ulcers and bleeding or tears in the esophagus.
