PSY 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Reverse Discrimination, Stereotype Threat, Psy
Document Summary
A threat in the air: effects on the targets of stereotypes and prejeduce. We are all the targets of other people"s stereotypes and prejudices. We are stereotyped and treated differently based on how we look, how we talk, and where we come from. But for the targets of some stereotypes and prejudices, these concerns are relentless and profound. The targets of stigmatizing stereotypes wonder frequently whether and to what extent others" impressions of them are distorted through the warped lens of social categorization. In particular situations, however, they can have both positive and negative consequences. If the participants thought that the white student could not see them and did not know their race, their self-esteem scores rose after positive feedback and declined after negative feedback. But when participants thought the evaluating student had seen them through a one-way mirror, negative feedback did not lower their self-esteem. In this situation, participants blamed the unfavourable evaluations on prejudice.
