Document Summary

The organic molecules of living organisms: carbon, the building block of living things. Comprises 18% of the body by weigh. Macromolecules: molecules are made by living cells, these functions are composed of carbon and the functional groups, cells can actually join small organic molecules together to form larger molecules called macromolecules, these belong to 4 . Polymers: a large molecule made from many similar small molecule called subunits or monomers. Dehydration/condensation synthesis of molecules: dehydration is the removal of water, breaking a polymer chain requires a hydrolysis reaction. Condensation reaction: a bond forms between 2 monomers, dehydration reaction. 2 molecules are covalently bonded to each other through loss of a water molecule. One molecule provides hydroxyl group and the other provides a hydrogen. To make a polymer the reaction is repeated as monomers are added one by one. A process whereby polymers are disassembled to monomers. It is essentially the reverse of the dehydration reaction.
