BSC 109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Endocrine Gland, Nonsteroidal, Lipid Bilayer
Document Summary
Clicker: a myopic eye is one that is too long, shifting the focus point in front of the retina and causes farsightedness. Clicker: bitter sense buds are more highly concentrated on the back portion of our tongue. Clicker: there are more rods than cones in the human eye. Endocrine system: collection of specialize cells, and tissues that secrete hormones. Endocrine glands: ductless organs that secrete hormones into blood, interstitial fluid, and lymph. Act on specific cells in the body (target cells) that have the appropriate hormone receptor. Know the hormones and what their functions are. Endocrine and the nervous system are both communication systems to the brain. Nervous system moves really fast but when the respond stops, the firing stops. The glands have to make the hormone and then it has to transport. The nervous system moves in milliseconds whereas the nervous system moves slower in minutes, hours, and even days. Each hormone acts only on specific cells (target cells)
