Document Summary

In order to be considered living, all of these characteristics must be had. Have a different molecular structure than non living things. Example: chemical analysis of a plant indicates that it is primarily composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and phosphorous; these elements are generally lacking in most rocks. All animals consume plants, animals, or other organisms in their environment. The body"s way of maintaining a stable internal environment. Purpose of organ systems are to maintain homeostasis. Our body"s purpose is to keep these within the homeostatic range. Example: certain blood vessels in humans constrict or dilate in during intense exercise. Organisms react to light, temperature, odor, sound, gravity, heat, water, pressure. Examples: plants growing in flower beds around a house close leaf pores during the hot hours of the day. Many species of fish increase swimming activity when moving into colder waters. All living things go through stages of development determined through.
