Bush: 10 years ago, and things are worse than they were before. From the lee/grant picture: the bush picture is ten years before the bush picture. The federal government did not provide reconstruction or rebuilding services. White, wealthy, southern people were not as wealthy after the war. Even if you survive the war and you have land, there is still a drought. 3 out of every 5 white men served in the military- some for all four years. Even thirteen year old boys went to war. If you made it home from the war, you probably did not make it home in one piece- physically and/or mentally (ptsd)
