HY 357 Lecture 7: Day 7
Document Summary
The surface war at sea: the situation in 1914, relative fleet strengths. French had 4 battleships during the beginning (not very good) Austrial hungarian navy had a small fleet. British had a commanding lead and germans were unlikely to catch up. Germans had 22 battleships and the british had 40. German fleets were always smaller than the british. All ships were concentrated in the north sea, while british are spread much more broadly. In turns of destroyers, germans outnumber 2 to 1. Problem is hitting a moving target while you are also moving. British have more ships, ship yards, germany is not secured by navy. Most money in germany goes into the army. Hms iron duke: 10 13-inch guns, can hit a target 20,000 yards away. Germans have a better fire control system. German battleships tend to have heavier armour than the british. This is done at the expense of fuel and gun powder.
