Chapter 1 - abnormal psychology: historical and modern perspectives. What is normal : usual or ordinary, not strange, mentally and physically healthy. What is abnormal : different from what is normal or average, unusual especially in a way that causes problems. Being different or deviant: individuals possessing abilities that distinguish them from the general public, behaviors straying from societal norms or standards, does not always mean it is abnormal behavior. Behaving dysfunctionally: patterns of behavior that interfere with normal daily routines/functioning. Behavior that leads to distress: behavior due to or the result of psychological or emotional distress. Behaving dangerously: result from intense emotional states or may signal the presence of a psychological disorder, but alone is not necessary or sufficient. Psychological disorders occur most frequently among the wealthy. o. By the age of 16, one out of three children and adolescents suffers from a psychological disorder. o.
