10% of youth have a communication disorder dysfunction in verbal and nonverbal exchange of: thoughts, ideas, interests, feelings. Effective communication involves: language, speech, social communication. Children with these diagnoses tend to function well in all other aspects of their life. Communication in which beliefs, knowledge, and skills can be experienced, expressed, or shared. Persistent difficulties in the acquisition and use of language across modalities due to deficits in comprehension or production that include the following: reduced vocabulary, limited sentence structure, impairments in discourse. Language abilities are substantially and quantifiably below those expected for age, resulting in, functional limitations in effective communication, social participation, academic or occupational performance, individually or in combination. The difficulties are not attributable to hearing or other sensory impairment, motor dysfunction, or another medical or neurological condition and are not better explained by intellectual disability or global developmental delay.
