A volcanic island between the islands of java and sumatra in indonesia. This central volcano erupted repeatedly, disastrously, and had huge consequences. Series of massive explosions on august 26th and 27th of 1883 which were the most violent volcanic events in modern times. Loudest explosion and many people died or injured. The explosion destroyed 2/3 of the island and found no life on the island. Explosions since then have built a new island called anak krakatau and within 3 years there were 43 species. Now there are huge populations of almost all species groups. Coconuts floated to the island which formed forests and 243 species 25 years later and 50 years later, new vertebrates. The number of bird species seemed to leveling off. They weren"t declining but no new species were being introduced and plant species were rocketing off. Wilson wrote a book on the theory of island biogeography. This theory allows us to predict species diversity in ecological time.
