Census data are typically collected by government agencies and are critical for decision making. In the central axis, one type of area will be located within another upper in the hierarchy. Off to either side, areas may cross boundaries of counties and cities. Developed by the national institute of standards and technology (nist) to ensure uniform identification of geographic entities. Fips is commonly used in census data. Census data provide a valuable perspective on the socioeconomic factors of our society. Provide shapefiles at blocks, block groups, tracts, countries, cities, zip codes, and other levels. Contain geographic features including roads, railroads, rivers, as well as legal and statistical geographic areas. Has its own proprietary format in 2008. After 2008 the bureau officially uses shapefile as the standard format of tiger data.
