PHY 158 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Standard Deviation
Document Summary
Vi-1: for the first experiment, all three partners recorded measurements of a pendulum bob diameter and a 100 gram mass" thickness using both a ruler and a digital caliper. Each student measured the bob and the mass once with both instruments. B- data for 100 g mass thickness, t: Conclusion: based on the measured values above we can notice that the digital caliper is overall more precise than the ruler. The data measured by the caliper is clearly larger than the date collected by a ruler. The reason behind this is that we are able to read the caliper with a maximum resolution of 0. 1 mm, whereas rulers can only be read with ac maximum resolution of. This gives us more precise values which helps us compare values and avoid future errors. The larger difference in measurements which caused the range of values in the ruler data is a product of the shape of the bob measured.
