Central nervous system (cns)- brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns)- all neurons that lie outside the brain and the spinal cord (divided into two groups, more in book) Spinal cord- connects the brain to the body through the pns. Houses bundles of axons that carry the brains messages to the body. Damage to the spinal cord interrupts messages from the brain to the body- higher up the injury, the worse it will be. Hemiplegia- one lateral side of the body-result of stroke, or spinal cord injury, paraplegia- impairment to the legs, quadriplegia- impairment to all four limbs. Brain- 100 billion neurons in the human brain. Cerebellum (known as the little brain)- coordination of movement, first region of brain effected by alcohol, physical balance. Pons- connects different regions of brain, sleep and arousal. Most important is reticular activating system- sleep, arousal, breathing, pain perception.
