Various definitions : idea that the self is our conception of ourselves, our idea of who we are, how we feel about ourselves and what motivates us. Is social in nature: who you think you are is dependent on other people. Two parts of the self: the i - the knower, ongoing stream of consciousness, the active self- harder to study, me - the known- everything that can be called mine, your memories, values, interests, traits, relationships, possessions. Me - three parts (william james: constituents (self- concept) Self- schemas: beliefs we hold about ourselves (in a domain) help organize. Situational context- where you are, what is going on in your life at the moment. What"s salient- what sticks out about you, what makes you unique. Age/ development- difference in stage of life: feelings and emotions (self- esteem, the acts that the constituents and feelings/ emotions prompt (self- motives)
