PSY 336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ponzo Illusion, Wagamama, Emic And Etic
Document Summary
Ponzo illusion: research - culture helps to determine our values & view of world. Brislin & keating (1976) arranged wooden boards to form a large ponzo figure (ecologically valid), displayed horizontally on ground (40 ft from 3 sets of adult respondents all of whom just arrived to hawaii). Small islands in micronesia, melanesia & polynesia (environment: few constructed perspective cues) First 2 groups more susceptible to ponzo illusion, supporting ecological hypothesis. Culture - includes learned behaviors, beliefs, attitude, customs, of a specific group / population. Contex - social system; physical environment; individual in context and time. Individualistic: self as autonomous individuals (personal attitudes guide behavior; independence) Collectivistic: self as appendage of group (group norms/rules guide behavior; harmony; interdependence) Patterns of secure and insecure relationships that appear in the u. s. also appear in other cultures. Proportions may differ though less so when the strange situation is re- normed for culture-specific patterns.
