Document Summary
Agression - relational and physical aggression during early childhood. Aggression: the intent to hurt, harm or injure another person (coie & dodge, 1998) Physical aggression: using physical force or threat of physical acts to hurt or harm. Ex: hit, kick, bite, punch, push, take toys/property from others. Trajectories of physical aggression from toddlerhood to middle childhood (srcd monograph) Maternal report, teacher reports, & outcome observations/lab tasks/self-report. Physical aggression: destroys own things, destroys others" things, gets in many fights, hits others, physically attacks people and cruel to animals. Past research & theory has been dominated by definitions of aggression that are male-biased & with samples comprised of boys only. Important to determine whether girls" behavior problems begin earlier than adolescence. Need to consider types of hostile, aggressive behaviors that are more characteristic of girls. Beginning at preschool (4-5yrs), girls socialized toward internalizing problems. Physically aggressive behavior among girls does not typically appear until adolescence.
