Neglected children"s status can change from time to time. Children like neglected children but they are not listed as preferred peers. Neglected children have poor social skills or may be socially withdrawn. Rejected children more likely to have disruptive behavioral problems. Aggression may not always lead to peer rejection. as leaders (by peers) & as socially competent by teachers (hawley, 2003) If associated with positive qualities (prosocial behavior), children may be viewed as dominant & Social competence: ability to use developmentally-appropriate social behaviors to enhance peer relationships w/o hurting others. Smile at, attend to, and comply with others. Children from single parent, low-income, unstimulating homes are likely to experience stress at home school and more likely to be rejected by peers. Argued that parenting practices have little / no influence on children"s personality development and peers have a great deal of influence. Child is frequently taken on outings with other family members. Child is encouraged to be responsible and sociable.
