Socy100 lecture notes chapter 4 (socialization and interaction) Parents are the source of primary socialization (children get first knowledge of language, norms, and values from parents) and engage in anticipatory socialization (teach children what the expectations of them are for the future) Socialization takes place informally with peer interaction. Children spend an increasing amount of time with friends as they mature. Peer socialization has an increasing likelihood of conflicting what is taught in schools and at home. Gender socialization- transmission of norms and values about what boys and girls can do, starts before birth. Gender differences and expectations of behavior are reinforced by clothes, toys, etc. (colors, Recently role of media in socialization has moved pasted television outlets. Children"s socialization is occurring through technology more often. Socialization is necessary to know how and what to consume. Items we consume reinforce lessons about class, gender, and race. More and more workers are changing jobs and careers more frequently.
