STAT 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Frequency Distribution
Document Summary
Categorical/qualitaive: variable whose values are atributes or characterisics. Quanitaive: variable whose values are numerical measures that arithmeic operaions can meaningfully be performed on. Discrete variables - variables that have a inite or a countable number of possibiliies-counts. Coninuous variables - variables that have an ininite, not countable, number of possibiliies- measurements. : statements about the sample: focus is on interpreing and presening the data that has been collected via the sample, no atempt is made to generalize to other (larger) groups. The distribuion of a variable tells what values a variable takes and how oten it takes these values. Distribuions can be displayed using a table, graph, or a funcion. A frequency distribuion lists: each of the categories, the frequency, or the count, of the observaions that belong to each category. A relaive frequency distribuion lists: each of the categories, the relaive frequency, or the proporions (or percents), of the observaions out of the total that belong to each category.
