The age of jackson: jackson, fought in the war of 1812, actually was a messenger in the war and was captured and put in prison, western. Called the common man : he had humbled origins self made man, through his own desires, the triumph of democracy. This is why everyone liked him so much: he proved that anyone could become president, what he did, westward movement. It becomes necessary to define who can and who cannot be a part of this process: democracy expands to all white men. Slaves were also economically dependent on their masters: gender and race. Eventually the states that originally allowed men to vote took it back: at one point only about 5 states allowed african american men to vote, those states only had about 4% of african american men. Common man: they appeal to the general population. Protecting the common man: against strong central government, whigs, american system.
