Community personality is the crux of the akan theory of the state. State is almost personified and takes precedent over individual. Akan society is founded on duties rather than rights. Traditional african societies set close limits on individual freedom and initiative. Exogamy of clan explained by right of succession. Akans recognized both private and public ownership.
