3 wars, lasted 265-146 bc (with interruptions) Long tradition of cooperation between rome and carthage prior to conflicts. Results of wars: carthage destroyed, rome undisputed master of western mediterranean by 202 bc (end of 2nd war) Rome now in direct contact with sicily, an island on which carthage had designs. Sends help to mercenaries in messana against syracuse. Carthage makes alliance with syracuse, and we have a war. Early part of war: land battles in sicily. Romans realized they would need a fleet in order to win the war: so they built one. Very destructive: large land campaigns - in sicily and carthage - though no attacks on rome: many sea battles. 242 bc rome destroys reactivated carthaginian fleet. Rome victories, carthage forced to leave sicily and pay war indemnity. Did not make sicilians citizens or allies. Decided to collect tribute (forced contributions) instead. Carthage start to build a land empire in spain.
