Miasma theory- (1700s) infectious disease is caused by miasmas. Miasmas are chemicals, bad air, leaving your window open, etc. This is one of the first not logical theories of the development of disease. Spontaneous generation- put forth the idea that life came from non-living things such as leaving meat out overnight and maggots suddenly appear. Redi- (1670s) disputed spontaneous generation with the meat experiment (covering the top of a jar of meat and showing that no flies appeared. Despite his discovery the population did still not believe it. Semmelweis- demonstrated that simple washing of hands could prevent disease; he was a surgeon that became frustrated with the constant infection and death in his hospital. Snow- proved the cholera outbreak was due to contaminated water.
